it's made easy

it's or its?

it's stands for "it is"
it's a miserable day  = it is a …
it's hard to understand  = it is hard …
so if you can substitute  "it is" and it makes sense, use it's



whereas its denotes possession and must be followed by a noun (or a noun with an adjective)

Glasgow and its beautiful parks
filet mignon and its accompaniments
the new model is cheaper than its predecessor
the mountain will retain its secret
